Afghanistan (2007). Here I led a team of 30 young men as a ‘Force Protection’ unit. Heavily armed, it was our role to protect our forces and those vulnerable. Here I am commanding a ‘Heavy Machine Gun’ line concentrating fire on enemy targets. The humility of those I served with is something that will always be with me. Beside me is Staff Sergeant Olaf Schmid (OZ) who later was killed as he disarmed an IED. RIP Buddy.
